Absolutely Ridiculous
As most people would know by now, a teacher in Sudan has been arrested for naming a teddy bear Muhammad. This is apparently an insult to Islam because their prophet was also called Muhammad and well that’s it. Obviously to any sane person this is absolutely ridiculous and then that sane person will proceed to condemn the actions of the Sudanese government.
However rather than rant on at the government for having the collective intelligence of a particularly dimwitted snail who happened to have been repeatedly dropped on his (or her) head in the few hours after his (or her) birth, I am going to rant at a couple of slightly different targets.
My first target is the Muslim Council of Britain. Now the MCB apparently represents all of the moderate muslims that are horrified at all of the actions of extremist musilms. So clearly keeping that in mind they have now said “obvious that no malice was intended” and that it was “quite horrible misunderstanding”. This is meant to be condemning the arrest and to many people who are only glancing over it may seem to do so. Yet all their statements do is pretty much say that the teacher did do something wrong but shouldn’t be punished because it was all one big happy mistake. Of course this raises the question of what if it wasn’t a mistake? Would the Sudanese government then be justified in arresting her? I suspect that the answer wouldn’t sit well with a lot of people.
My other target is Gordon Brown and any idiot adviser who told him what he should say. Gordon Brown said yesterday that he felt “very sorry for what has happened to Miss Gibbons”, and that every effort was being made to ensure a speedy release. And that’s it. Just a shrug of the shoulders and a shake of the head. This is just too fucked up to believe. The man who is supposedly in charge of our country doesn’t have the guts or the integrity to say that the whole bloody thing is a comnplete and utter shambles and that this situation is unacceptable. Nope. Instead we get “We’re making a lot of effort to get you out,” which makes it sound as though the teacher has done something wrong but since it was all one big happy misunderstanding no punishment should take place. Bastards. The lot of them.
So, you can probably guess that my rant was aimed at the apologists in this case but I am still seriously pissed off at the Sudanese government and others like them but it is the people who are saying “I understand why you’re upset but she didn’t mean it in that way so you should really ley her off,” who are the main trget for me right now. This is so obviously ridiculous and barbaric that everyone should be standing up and unequivocally condemning it. This kind of thing is not acceptable now nor should it ever be.
